Seasonal Energetics
As a youngster, we notice the seasons through the excitement of significant dates, Easter, your Birthday, Christmas and so on. Only as we get older do we begin to recognise that as the seasons shift, so too do we. We notice a vulnerability on the days when the new season unfurls and then a movement into a state of being that is familiar. Mastering and leaning into the energetics of the seasons can open up a reliable and aligned annual rhythm and foster a profound connection to the natural world. Everything is perfectly designed for us to thrive if we are willing to listen.
When we instead choose to seek dominion over nature, we lose. Understanding our place and our purpose for being here can be manageable. Questions without answers can leave us interested, engaged and awake if we can tame our fear of the unknown.
"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer." ― Rainer Maria Rilke
Modern-day life isn't sympathetic to a desire to move with the delicacies of an ever-changing internal and external world. Instead, it promotes linearity and uniformity. This revolution in temporality is associated with the diffusion of the mechanical clock. “Time is money” chimed Benjamin Franklin, setting the seal on time's historic transition: once a gift from the gods, now a resource exchangeable for money.
The urge to unsubscribe from linear time grows with age and experience. It takes one period of burnout to realise that forging forwards at a prescribed rhythm and pace doesn't work for everyone.
To suggest that we move away entirely from the uniformity of how we spend our time would be an impractical suggestion for many – how we spend our time isn't wholly up to us. In this situation, learning how to work with the Seasons both actually and metaphorically is really a weaving of the essence of seasonality into our current set-up. The reward: more flow, a greater understanding of energy and a format for the year.
Evidence supports that our brains are affected by Seasonal changes; learning about your relationship to the seasons will significantly impact your life. I live in the UK, where we have four distinct seasons; I get four different lives in one year! A great sense of peace and joy fills my world when I move and change with the seasons rather than wish them away. There is beauty everywhere.
I have written a short practice for seasonal energetic work which I share with you below. In the On Balance membership SEASON, I teach the energetics of the season to help bring your visions to life and enhance your world. The membership launches on Monday, 6th March so there is still time to join.
Summer
Key words :: vibrancy, openness, possibility, sociability, abundance, light
Emotional transition - to Autumn
You can feel grief if the long Summer days bring you intense joy; the key is noticing and saying goodbye for now. There can be a culmination of energy, a back-to-school sort of energy. This transition can be an excellent time for organisation and grounding.
Questions
How can I remain steady amongst the vibrancy?
How can I welcome in opportunity?
Where might I look to draw boundaries?
How can I lean into the energy as summer draws to a close?
Autumn
Key words :: cosy, completed cycles, shedding, grounding, preparing, ritual
Emotional transitions - to Winter
There can be a feeling of time moving very quickly, a reflective energy that you can positively use when there is awareness. But, on the other hand, fear and loneliness can surface as we anticipate longer nights.
Questions
What do I need to complete?
How do I create comfort in my life?
How can I show gratitude?
Winter
Key words :: intropective, deep, contemplative, familial, dark, solitude, silence
Emotional transitions - to Spring
An eagerness for more life can pull you from staying present with Winter; as Winter draws to a close, we often feel tired and as though we are missing clarity. These feelings can come from not using Winter for deep rest and introspection and instead fighting this naturally slower time.
Questions
How can I welcome in more rest?
What approach can I use for self-reflection?
Do I have community in my life?
When and how will I check in with loved ones?
Spring
Key words :: awaken, rise, forward motion, momentum, cleansing, clarity, hope, joy, new beginnings
Emotional transitions - to Summer
We might place expectations on the salve of summer and find that our energy isn’t there. Anxiety can surface if you feel overwhelmed with possibility rather than excitement.
Questions
What do I need to do to set my vision?
What do I need to clean up in my life?
How can I trust the momentum of my life?
